luciajournal : stories
I've taken the coming week off of the consulting work I do for a living, in order to sink more deeply into this summer, Lucia, and the creative life . . .
A bit of progress I'm excited to share, and there is no other real reason for this short Daily Note than to say "it's coming" and "I am excited" and "finally." Last week, the completed layout of Lucia's third print issue went into a Dropbox folder for Karly (design advisor) and Sarah (who graciously agreed to serve as copy editor). This issue has been nearly two years in the making…
Planning is the bane of joy. So why do I do it all the time? Why do I give myself a goal even on my days off? Why is it so scary to leave things up to chance and whims?
Our lives are the sum of micro movements. Every second of every day, an infinite number of unpredictable factors wholly predict the course we travel—the people we meet, our life experiences and where we find ourselves—right here, right now. Independently, these factors seem trivial. A butterfly in Bali couldn’t possibly cause a hurricane in Bermuda. Or, could it?
As someone who makes her living working remotely, it's hard to admit that the only way to truly connect with someone is to look them in the eyes. Over the past two weeks, I have looked more strangers in the eye, many in the throes of some of their deepest struggles, and offered these words: "Buen Camino." The American equivalent? "Happy trails." The literal translation: "Good way."
I reached a breaking point. I had to set down some boundaries to institute discipline around my schedule, and all of a sudden I had free time. It felt very strange to have that free time, and my first instinct was to pick up more projects. Luckily my manager stopped me, saying, "Remember two weeks ago when you were in my office telling me you had no time for anything? Why don't you back off for a bit? I'll tell you if you're not working hard enough."
