as you are

Sunday, May 7, 2017 - Daily Notes, From the Editor

(330 words)

Come as you are. You with the messy hair and fancy shoes. You with the styled curls and store-bought salsa. I want you here with me. Oh, your emotions have not yet landed? That's a relief, neither have mine. Oh, your story is still unfolding, uncertain, unknown? Thank goodness, me too. Come sit on my living room floor. Let's have a circle.

The women behind Lucia gathered Friday night for tacos, mezcal, and May.

Karly, our intrepid millennial design advisor, is passing through Seattle on her way to Alaska for the summer. So for the first time ever (yes, ever) the four of us were physically in the same room.

Yes, the floor pillows were out. Yes, the magic started the moment we sat. Soft evening light, cherry and lilac blossoms, candles, guacamole, and vegetables formed an altar in the center around which we coalesced.

And, after two months of nearly non-stop non-Lucia client work, I have been feeling disconnected and worried. So I was especially grateful for the opportunity to sit together and share with this team my vision, intention, and near-term plan of action for Lucia. As importantly, I wanted to communicate the value I see each of them contributing to the creation we are collaboratively midwifing into the world next, Issue Three.

Then, we ate.

What I loved most was that each of us showed up just as we were. Not fancy, not trying to impress each other, more inspiring with tousled hair, supermarket hors d'oeuvres, and a blooming tree branch in a borrowed vase than any lifestyle magazine selling perfection could ever hope to be.

Come as you are. Because if we wait until life is perfect we will never have another circle. And small circles of women giving voice to the heart are the very thing that will wind up saving humanity in the end, which will hopefully feel more like a beginning, but only if you come as you are.
